APC Educational Outreach Highlights Construction Safety and Process
May 8, 2025
At APC, supporting the communities we serve is a top priority. Whether through industry education, hands-on demonstrations, or community outreach, APC continually looks for meaningful ways to engage with young learners and inspire curiosity about construction and safety.
Most recently, Sara Weimer of APC Construction in Golden, CO visited a local Pre-K classroom to introduce students to work zones, safety practices, and the basics of how asphalt is made and placed. The visit turned a complex topic into an interactive, fun, and memorable experience for the kids.
Sara kicked off the session by discussing the importance of work zones and the safety measures construction crews use every day. With a miniature work zone setup—featuring cones, signage, and toy equipment—she helped students visualize how workers and machines operate safely while building and maintaining roads. The children enthusiastically participated, with a few even trying on their own pint-sized safety vests.
To explain the paving process, Sara introduced a creative and tasty hands-on demonstration. Using graham crackers to represent the subgrade, she then guided the children through mixing “chocolate asphalt”—a blend of melted chocolate (acting as asphalt cement), oats, slivered almonds, and walnuts to represent the different aggregates. The final step involved spreading the mixture and using a soup can to “compact” the asphalt, just like in real paving operations.
The presentation, directed with support from James Krattennaker, was both educational and entertaining. “The children learned about work zones, safety, and the process of making asphalt in a hands-on and engaging way,” Sara said. “It’s great to be involved with the community and teach the rising generation.”
This classroom visit reflects APC’s ongoing commitment to community involvement and education. By connecting with students in fun and creative ways, team members like Sara help demystify the construction industry and spark early interest in the work that shapes our infrastructure. It’s moments like these that plant the seeds for a future generation that values safety, understands the importance of quality construction, and may one day build roads of their own.
